British scientists said that children infected with COVID-19 may show neurological symptoms associated with impaired central and peripheral nervous system function.
Omar Abdel-Mannan, PhD, and his colleagues examined 27 patients under the age of 18. Scientists noticed that four children who were previously healthy and did not have concomitant chronic diseases had complications, including encephalopathy, headaches, signs of damage to the brain stem and cerebellum, muscle weakness and decreased reflexes.
The children needed treatment in the intensive care unit. According to scientists, now children's neuropathologists, when making a diagnosis, should conduct a differential diagnosis with SARS-CoV-2.
