The device has a digital wide-angle retinal camera worth about 13 million rubles, which can be used to diagnose patients of any age. But first of all, they will examine premature babies, as they often develop retinopathy.
Retinopathy is a lesion of the retina of the eyeball, caused by vascular disorders leading to a disorder of the blood supply to the retina.
“When the retina is still immature, vascular growth continues in it. However, external factors such as light and oxygen can adversely affect this growth” explains Elena Pavlova, ophthalmologist at OKB No. 2. - In such cases, inflammation and swelling of the retina are possible. Doctors distinguish five degrees of retinopathy of prematurity - from minimal changes in the retina and up to its complete detachment. In the latter case, there is a high risk of vision loss.
Children's doctors try to prevent the development of the disease. Babies born early or with a weight of less than two kilograms are tested for vision in the maternity hospital. For examination by the retinal chamber, infants are sent around the fourth week after birth. If necessary, conduct dynamic observation until the formation of the vessels of the retina is over or it becomes clear that the baby requires laser surgery.
Examination with a retinal camera is a painless process. A pupil dilating the pupils is instilled into the baby’s eyes. Then, with the help of a camera, the fundus is photographed and then the doctor can already draw conclusions about the condition of the baby's retina.
