Chinese researchers have shown that regular exercise reduces the risk of age-related cataracts, which cause blindness in about 13 million people worldwide.

Experts from XI'an Jiaotong University and the University of South Australia analyzed data from six studies that involved more than 170,000 people. They found a 10 percent reduction in the frequency of age-related cataracts among people who regularly exercise, such as walking or Cycling.

Physical activity reduces oxidative stress in the eye by suppressing lipid degradation, which leads to cell damage, explained one of the authors of the work, epidemiologist Min Li. Researchers have found that the risk of developing cataracts can decrease by 2% for every hour of Cycling or walking a day. "Given the fact that 24% of adults are inactive, these results will hopefully encourage older adults to exercise regularly" says Dr. Lee.

According to the results of the study, it should be concluded that physical activity in general protects not only from cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, but also from blindness, that is, any sport is the key to longevity, which should be started at an early age and continue even in old age.
