A study previously conducted by a group of scientists from Poland and the UK showed that SARS-CoV-2 lives in fresh water and sewage for up to 25 days. In addition, these reservoirs of water can act as pathways for the spread of the virus: when untreated water is consumed or it gets on the mucous membranes, the virus can enter the body.

This study of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, carried out by Russian scientists, was carried out at the Vector Center. Scientists have found out the duration of the viability of the virus in fresh and salt water, and also tested the effect on it of different temperatures.

Experts have found that SARS-CoV-2 does not multiply in dechlorinated and seawater, but it can remain viable. According to scientists, boiling leads to the complete destruction of the virus, and in chlorinated water, it loses its viability.

The head of the department, Anna Popova, said about the inability of the coronavirus to multiply in water and that it is extremely sensitive to temperature changes. She says: "Today we see that the virus does not multiply either in sea water or in fresh water, but at the same time it can persist, although our close monitoring - about 800 studies - shows that there are no such risks yet."

Researchers from the University of Provence have determined the temperature required for the death of the coronavirus. They heated the cells of the pathogen to 60 degrees Celsius for an hour and found that some of its strains could multiply even at high temperatures, but when heated to 92 degrees, it completely died after 15 minutes.

The authors of this work argue that most coronavirus particles in water at room temperature die within 24 hours, and after three days, less than 0.1% remains. To prevent waterborne contamination, drinking water should be boiled and swimming areas should be avoided.
