The artificial intelligence software, which was developed by American researchers, can accurately assess the progression of geographic atrophy, a disease of the photosensitive retina caused by age-related macular degeneration.

This innovative approach enables fully automated measurements of major atrophic lesions using optical coherence tomography data, which provides three-dimensional visualization of the retinal structure. In addition, the research team can accurately determine the integrity of light-sensitive cells throughout the central retina, as well as detect progressive degenerative changes in photoreceptors outside of the underlying lesions.

Research in ophthalmology is increasingly based on artificial intelligence data. Fully automated and accurate analysis of the smallest microstructural changes in optical coherence tomography data using AI represents an important step towards personalized medicine for patients with age-related macular degeneration.
