Results from a randomized controlled trial show that participants using a weighted blanket for four weeks reported significant improvements in sleep patterns, higher levels of daily activity, and decreased symptoms of fatigue, depression and anxiety.

The study involved 120 adults (68% women, 32% men) who were previously diagnosed with clinical insomnia and a comorbid mental disorder: depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder. Their average age was about 40 years.

The participants were randomly assigned. Participants classified in the weighted blanket group tried an 8 kg (about 17.6 lb) blanket at the clinic. Ten participants considered it too heavy and instead received a 6 kg (about 13.2 lb) blanket. The control group slept under a lightweight plastic blanket weighing 1.5 kg (about 3.3 lb). The change in the severity of insomnia was assessed using the insomnia severity index.

As a result, about 60% of the participants tested positive with a 50% or more reduction in insomnia.

“We were surprised at the significant effect of the weighted blanket on insomnia and pleased with the reduction in anxiety and depression levels,” the researchers added.
