Down syndrome is a congenital genetic disease associated with impaired cognitive functions, decreased muscle tone, heart defects and other clinical abnormalities.

The authors of the work, published in the journal Sciencedaily, used skin samples from two Down syndrome patients to create induced pluripotent stem cells, which then differentiated into endothelial cells, which contribute to the building of blood vessels and the vascular system, as well as mesodermal cells, which are responsible for the development of connective tissues and muscles. In the process of differentiation, scientists have discovered downregulated genes that appear to be involved in abnormal muscle development and heart problems in people with Down syndrome.

By studying the role of these genes in biochemical pathways associated with tumor development, they found that decreased expression of such genes interferes with the processes necessary for tumor formation and growth. These genes interfered with cell movement, slowed cell proliferation, and decreased the inflammatory response, creating a microenvironment that was not conducive to tumor development. In the future, this study will be able to provide invaluable service in the field of cancer treatment.
