The term «antibodies» refers to proteins produced by an organism to combat an infection. Since the 20th century, scientists have proven the efficacy of blood plasma in patients recovering from the disease. That is why American doctors see this as an option for treating coronavirus infection.
As the plasma donated by donors is not sufficient for all patients, scientists have proposed the creation of monoclonal antibodies specifically designed to combat a specific infection.
Phyllis Kankey, Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases at Harvard:
«Sometimes antibodies that work in a laboratory and are really well neutralized are not as effective when used on animal models or in humans, so it is always a little difficult».
«There is also hope to get results of antilottery already by August of this year», - said the employees of the Chinese biotechnology company I-Mab. Monoclonal antibodies are currently being tested on patients with cytokine storm, so antibodies may be available for use by early autumn.
SAB Bio therapeutics from South Dakota has volunteered to begin human trials for antibodies derived from blood plasma. Several other treatments are still being tested in the laboratory.
Most experts believe that antibody treatment can be solved more quickly than vaccination, although vaccine development is also proceeding at an accelerated pace.
