The first reported case of viral keratoconjunctivitis shows that in coronavirus infection unusual redness of the eyes may develop, which is one of the symptoms of COVID-19.
Doctors report that an unknown symptom was found in a 29-years-old hospitalized patient. Doctors noticed that the patient's right eye was reddened, also watery discharge and photophobia were observed. Before returning to Canada, the patient spent a month in the Philippines and one day in San-Francisco.
The patient developed rhinitis, cough and conjunctivitis. The woman did not complain of a fever, although she admitted that she was taking antipyretic drugs that could mask a slight fever. After several days, the symptoms worsened, and the patient was referred to an ophthalmic clinic.
An eye swab was taken in the laboratory, the result of which was positive for the presence of SARS-CoV-2. This case proves that additional measures must be taken to identify unusual symptoms of the disease in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
