Vladimir Richter, Deputy Director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Basic Medicine of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences for Scientific Work, reported that a virus developed on the basis of a smallpox vaccine was being prepared for human testing, having successfully passed the pre-clinical tests.
So far, this drug has been tested on cell models and animals, and is now awaiting documents from the Ministry of Health to allow clinical trials in humans. The first stage is the evaluation of safety in humans, which will be carried out in the city of Saint Petersburg.
Richter added that the first time-testing of the drug would take about a year and a half. Because the virus is based on the smallpox vaccine virus, two genes have been cut out of this genome, which are responsible for its virulence. And then in this genome, instead of those two, two genes were inserted that amplified the oncolytic activity of this virus.
The peculiarity of the action on tumor cells is the search, infection and reproduction of the virus only in one coquette. That is, the inability of the virus to be present and reproduce in other cells of the human body, only in cancers.
In addition, the scientist explained two things: first, the virus produces proteins that kill this cell, and second, it has a good blood-blood rate (through blood) propagated in search of other tumor cells and thus infect common metastases.
For the time being, this drug is directed only against breast tumors, but in pre-clinical trials, the drug has been effective in other cancers. On the basis of this, it is possible to conclude that our medicine really does not stand still, it is necessary to work on new ideas and finds in the field of treatment of «incurable» diseases, to fight against diseases, to reduce the mortality from them.
