Prostate cancer is the second deadliest cancer in men.

In developing the prototype of the drug, scientists used the Warburg effect, which manifests itself in that tumor cells feed on «sugar», i.e., actively consume glucose compounds.

Scientists are looking for an effective drug that will kill cancer cells, bypassing healthy cells. Thus, to antitumor molecules created on the basis of marine hedgehog pigments, scientists with the aid of sulfur atoms «sewed» glucose tail. The new drug can be effective, the oncologists say. Sergey Dyshlova, Scientific Officer of the Laboratory of Biologically Active Substances of the School of Natural Sciences of the DVFU, explained about the study of the drug.

Scientists combined laboratory analogues of biologically active marine urchin pigment molecules showing anti-tumor activity with glucose molecules to efficiently deliver the active agent to cancer cells. It turns out that prostate cancer cells have a large number of receptors through which glucose enters them. Together with it, the active substance will be directed into the tumor tissue. The penetration of antitumor substances together with glucose appears to be a promising direction for further study in other types of tumors.
