Caries is a pathological process that develops in the hard tissues of the tooth, and without proper treatment, leading to complications from the pulp and periodontium.

The main attention is paid to the diagnosis of early caries, affecting only the enamel surface of the tooth. If it is detected early enough, then non-invasive methods of treating this ailment can be used.

There are three categories of fluorescence devices: red, blue and green. Each of them is defined by different wavelengths. To assess the accuracy of diagnostic tests on fluorescent instruments, a study was conducted comparing two or more index tests.

A total of 133 studies were included. The studies included in the review were conducted in Brazil, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, North America and Australia. It was found that the devices based on blue and green fluorescence, apparently outperformed devices based on red fluorescence. The study has low reliability, as there are significant differences in the characteristics of these devices based on fluorescence and there was a proportion of cases of misdiagnosed caries.

Any future research should be conducted in a clinical setting and consider the potential of fluorescent devices for use alongside other devices.
