Scientists have found that the negative impact on the fetus from drinking alcohol increases in the ninth week of pregnancy, while the risk increases regardless of the amount of alcohol consumed. The median gestational age to stop drinking was 29 days.

The study included women planning a pregnancy or early pregnancy from eight metropolitan areas in Tennessee, North Carolina and Texas. In order to avoid an increased risk of abortion, the researchers emphasized the importance of using pregnancy tests that identify a woman "in position" even before her period is missed, allowing time to stop drinking alcohol if pregnancy is possible.

Abstinence from alcoholic beverages during conception and, even more so, during pregnancy has long been recommended by physicians in order to avoid many fetal lesions, including to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome.
