It is widely known that adult human skin cells can be reprogrammed into cells similar to human embryonic stem cells, which can then be used as material for the production of cells of various organs and tissues known as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Placental tissue can be created in the same way.

In Singapore, they investigated the molecular changes through which adult skin cells became iPSCs. It was while studying this process that they discovered a new way to create induced trophoblast stem cells that can be used to create placental cells.

"This discovery will provide an opportunity to model the human placenta in vitro and will pave the way for future cell therapy," commented the researchers.
