Body Weight Negatively Affect Brain Function

As a person gains weight, brain activity and blood circulation in all areas of the brain decrease, contributing to the onset of Alzheimer's, according to a new study.

In one of the largest studies linking obesity to brain dysfunction, scientists analyzed more than 35,000 functional neuroimaging scans using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of more than 17,000 people to measure blood flow and brain activity. This study showed that being overweight (obesity) seriously affects brain function and increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease and many other mental and cognitive disorders.

This study highlights the need to tackle obesity as a goal of interventions to improve brain function, be it preventing Alzheimer's disease or trying to optimize cognitive function in a younger population.

According to the authors, one of the most important lessons they have learned over 30 years of brain imaging research is that by living a healthy lifestyle (moderate calorie intake, regular exercise), brain function can be improved.
