Researchers are working on a drug that blocks the action of SARS-CoV-2

Scientists from the University of Bristol noticed that the SARS-CoV-2 virus with its spikes can bind to the protein neuropilin-1 (NRP1) and penetrate the cells of the human body. The study will allow scientists to create a new type of vaccine and drug against COVID-19.

University of California, San Diego reports that American researchers are developing a new type of drug - nanoscongs that can neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, as well as block the excess cytokines that cause the cytokine storm (uncontrolled inflammation, which leads to damage to the body’s own tissues).

A nano-sponge is a polymer core coated with cell membranes transferred from lung epithelial cells and macrophage cells. Thus, the sponges will be coated with protein receptors. SARS-CoV-2 virus encounters this particle, binds to it and will no longer be able to penetrate the cell.

Coating the nanogongs with macrophage membranes ensures the absorption of inflammatory proteins of cytokines, which are the main cause of an excessive inflammatory reaction in the body with COVID-19 - the “cytokine storm”.

This study of scientists showed that the use of “biological baits” developed by them in a concentration of five milligrams per milliliter blocks 93% of SARS-CoV-2 viruses. Researchers note that if an infection still develops resistance to vaccines and antiviral drugs after some time, then nano-sponges will continue to be just as effective.
