Clinical trials conducted by researchers, in which mainly middle-aged people participated, indicate that aspirin may increase the risk of developing cancer, which is especially true for rectal cancer. In October 2018, scientists published an unexpected and disturbing report showing a link between aspirin use and an increased risk of early death, primarily due to cancer.
The authors of this study conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of daily low-dose aspirin intake in healthy older adults. The study included 19,114 participants from Australia and the United States over the age of 70, as well as representatives of national minorities from the United States over 65. The subjects were not diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, dementia, or disabilities at the start of the study. Participants were followed up for an average of 4.7 years.
981 participants who took aspirin and 952 participants who used placebo for the same purpose developed cancer. Aspirin was associated with a 19% increased risk of metastatic cancer and a 22% increased risk of stage 4 cancer. The result showed that the effect of aspirin at the cellular or molecular level is different depending on the age category, but in any case, its use can have a negative impact on health, especially in elderly patients and / or with cancer, which can accelerate the onset of death.
