At Australian Monash University, a team of researchers have shown results of work on a drug that can prevent a heart attack. This information was published in Science Translational Medicine.

The development of a heart attack has been studied in laboratory mouse models. It was found that the class II phosphoinositide-3-kinase enzyme affects thrombus formation, and after the removal of this particular enzyme, this process stops.

In the course of the experiment, scientists found an altered membrane on the platelet slices, which prevented platelets from fusing both with each other and with the vascular wall. Thus, the process of blood clots formation inside the vessels was stopped.

Since the development of a stroke is preceded by a change in blood circulation, the results of this study can be considered a discovery.

By turning off the action of class II phosphoinositide 3-kinase, vascular occlusion was eliminated and, as a result, strokes and heart attacks were prevented. Further research in this area, according to the authors, may in the future "shift" cardiovascular diseases from the first place of causes of death.
