New Potential Cure for Coronavirus

A group of scientists has conducted a study based on the use of human monoclonal antibodies.

Monoclonal antibodies are antibodies produced by immune cells to recognize foreign agents (antigens) and destroy them. They can be raised against any natural antigen that the antibody will specifically bind.

The researchers identified and then created a tiny antibody component that binds to the coronavirus 'spike' protein - the rod-like projections that the virus uses to attach to and enter cells. Although this monoclonal antibody, called Ab8, interfered with the formation of the spike protein, it did not bind to human cells, suggesting that it is safe for humans. Ab8 is so small that researchers speculate that it can be administered using an inhaler.

Experiments with monoclonal antibodies are not new: such studies in animals are notorious for not being effective in humans. However, this can be refuted in the course of further clinical trials.
